NZLawyer2B
will be an annual A4 publication that will be an extension of our annual NZ Report and will be specifically distributed (free of charge) to NZ law students at the various law schools around New Zealand who are in the final year of either their undergraduate or postgraduate law degree.

NZLawyer Student writing Prize
The purpose of the NZLawyer Student Writing Prize (Writing Prize) is to reward and acknowledge legal research and writing excellence by New Zealand (undergraduate) law students

RULES

  1. Eligibility: The Writing Prize is open to all students who are enrolled in the LLB or LLB (Hons) degree (undergraduate degree) at a law school at any New Zealand university. 
     
  2. Topic: The Writing Prize will be awarded to the best original, unpublished essay or opinion (essay) on any legal topic that has previously been submitted and graded for credit in any elective legal course at a law school at any New Zealand University.
     
  3. Academic Recommendation: All student essays submitted for the Writing Prize must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from an academic who assessed the essay for credit for an undergraduate degree. To receive a recommendation, the essay must be an outstanding example of academic research, demonstrating novelty in thought or analysis as well as excellence in research, structure, and style.
     
  4. Submission Requirements: Entries must be submitted as an attachment in MS Word format, via email to the following email address: darise.bennington@lexisnexis.co.nz. Entries should be up to 10,000 words in length.
     
  5. Identification: Entries must be prefaced with a separate cover sheet with the name, student ID number, email address and mobile phone number of the entrant.
     
  6. Deadline: The deadline for submission is 5pm on Monday 9 August 2010. No entry will be accepted after the deadline.
     
  7. Judging Panel: Entries will be assessed by a panel consisting of the editor of NZLawyer and two other persons appointed by the editor. All judging and other decisions of the panel are complete and final in all regards, and no correspondence will be entered into.
     
  8. Criteria: Entries will be judged on the following criteria: research and critical analysis; originality; writing style; clarity; persuasiveness (in the case of arguments made); pragmatism (in the case of proposals); compliance with these rules; and the relevance and interest of the topic and the content to a broad section of the profession.
     
  9. Prize: The top three essays, as decided by the judging panel, will be published in extracted form in the inaugural issue of NZLawyer2B and in full on the NZLawyer website, and the winning essay will be published in NZLawyer. The Writing Prize winner will also receive a $1,500 cash prize, the runner-up a $500 cash prize and the second runner-up a collection of essential legal texts.
     
  10. Sole Original Work: All entries must be the original, unpublished work of an individual law student at a New Zealand university. Jointly authored papers are not eligible. Normal guidance of law school faculty is permitted.
